Anyone reading any good books recently?

I've just finished The time travellers wife. Quite enjoyed it :)

Hi, I've just finished The Bradshaw Variations by Rachel Cusk.

Well, I have ambiguous feelings. Good book for holidays but I've got the impression that Polish translation has spoilt it wink

I'm reading the latest Jean Auel - The Land of Painted Caves.  Long awaited final book in the 'Earth's Children' series.  Fascinating novels around the life of Stone Age and Neanderthal people.

I'm busy reading books by Anne Bennett and Katie Flynn at the moment. I'm enjoying the relaxing  style of both authors.

Has anyone bought an e reader yet or is everyone sticking to books  ? I am seriously thinking about it, but not too sure. I still love books.

I love the smell of paper and I like leafing through the book, too.

But recently I purchased Amazon Kindle e-book reader and I'm delighted with it. You can take hundreds of books with you wherever you go. The classic is usually free and easy to download. What's important to me - it has got a built-in Oxford English dictionary which I find very useful when reading books in English. I've got the 3G international version which means free access to the net worldwide. Very convenient on holidays - Aled's website displays very well on it smiley

I'm now seriously tempted, but going to investigate more before I finally buy.

Well, it’s obvious you need to know what you exactly need and what features are important to you.

The decision took me several months as it was not a cheap business for me. I searched the web reading users’ comments and technical descriptions before I finally chose this particular one.

What is worth doing is to check what file formats the e-reader works with, whether your favourite literature is available in these particular formats and what online sources you are going to use most – do they support your chosen e-reader?

And many e-readers have different qualities – you need to know what else (apart from simply reading ebooks) you are going to use it for: store pics, music, have an access to the web or just be delighted with its beauty ;-)

I have finally got one - bought the 3G version because I am not Wi-Fi connected - but as yet have not used it to read anything.

I have noticed that books are cheaper and there are loads of free books too. Once I have finished my normal book I'll start using my Kindle.

Any suggestions for titles of free books to add to my library would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Congratulations on your purchase

If you want to have 29000 free ebooks - just go to the site:  w w w . f r e e k i n d l e b o o k s . o r g  (with no spaces - I had to fool the spam filter), connect your Kindle to your computer and download "Magic Catalog of Project Gutenberg E-Books” to the "documents" directory on your Kindle. Then a catalog file will appear at "Home" and you'll be able to download any of these 29000 free books with just one click (you must have the connection via 3G or be within reach of any free Wi-Fi.

If you already registered your Kindle at Amazon site you're also able to download free all books priced 0,00 smiley

At the moment I'm reading "How to speak and write correctly" by Joseph Devlin. I don't recommend it to you. The "plot" is extremely boring

Sue R

Thanks Magda

I'll try that.

I am reading Arnold Bennett's Anna Of The Five Towns - a free book from the Kindle Store. I live in Stoke-on-Trent and this book is based on the five towns of Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Fenton, Longton. It's going to be interesting to see if I recognise any of the places he describes, as so much has changed.

I have also bought several books by Katie Flynn and have found them very reasonably priced. I love the idea of being able to carry several books around in such a small space and no doubt will be downloading more soon.

Thumbs up for the Kindle here!

I think it's fantastic. just reading The Eagle Of The Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff on it.

Just finished reading a book by a Finnish priestess (Mrs. Liisa Seppänen), entitled "In Celtic pathways, meetings with the saints".  In this book, the authoress describes her journey through Ireland in the footsteps of various Irish saints including Bede, Brigid, Columba, St. Patrick and Hilda amongst others. It was my recent Celtic-flavoured mini-mass gig that inspired me to get this book for myself, and all that I read was highly interesting and very inspiring indeed!

The writer of  The Time Traveller's Wife, I read was frustrated in love when she began the work and wrote the story as a metaphor for her failed relationships. I understand that the tale's central theme came to her suddenly and subsequently supplied the book's title. Apparently the novel, which has been classified as both science fiction and romance, is supposed to examine the issues of love, loss, and free will. In particular, using time travel to explore miscommunication and distance in relationships, while also investigating deeper existential questions. Would you agree?

I see that many reviewers were impressed with the writer's unique perspectives on time travel. Some praised her characterization of the couple, applauding their emotional depth; others criticized her writing style as melodramatic and the plot as emotionally trite. Whose side would you be on?
